Global Brotherhood: Over Seven Million Strong

Freemasonry isn’t just a local club; it’s a massive worldwide group of brothers. While getting an exact headcount is tough due to our private nature, the brotherhood is now estimated to include over seven million members. You’ll find lodges operating on every continent except Antarctica, from the Americas and Europe to Asia and Africa.

The Americas: A Masonic Heartland

The American continent is a major stronghold for Freemasonry. Beyond the massive communities in the United States (2 million), Canada (200,000), and Brazil (215,000), the craft is also well-established in Mexico, Argentina, and right across the Caribbean and South America, from Chile to the Dominican Republic.

European Foundations: Where Tradition Runs Deep

Europe is the historic home of modern Freemasonry, with deeply rooted jurisdictions. Alongside major communities in the UK (200,000) and France (170,000), you’ll find active lodges from Sweden and Germany in the north to Italy, Spain, and Portugal in the south, as well as throughout Eastern Europe.

Australia and Oceania

Here in our part of the world, Freemasonry is a well-established part of the community. Australia has a strong presence with around 45,000 members, and New Zealand has a vibrant community of about 8,000. The tradition also extends to other parts of Oceania, including New Caledonia.

Growing Presence Across Asia

The Masonic brotherhood has a significant and growing footprint across Asia. India has a long history and a community of over 25,000 members, while lodges are also present in many other nations, including the Philippines, Japan, Israel, Thailand, and Malaysia.

African Continent: A Diverse Masonic Landscape

In Africa, Freemasonry has taken root in a diverse range of nations. South Africa has an established community of about 10,000 members, and the craft is also active in countries like Nigeria, Ghana, Morocco, and Namibia, each with its own unique character.

Challenge of Counting a Global Family

You might wonder why it’s hard to get a precise number of Masons worldwide. With lodges operating independently in nearly every country under different Grand Lodges, and with membership constantly changing, the estimate of over seven million is the best indicator we have of our vast, global scale.

Unity in Diversity: One Brotherhood, Many Nations

The real magic is that despite being in over 200 countries, from Brazil to Belgium and Sweden to South Africa, the core values of Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth remain the same. This shared commitment is what truly unites this global network of men.

Brotherhood Without Borders

Ultimately, Freemasonry demonstrates that a shared commitment to bettering oneself and serving others knows no geographical boundaries. Whether a brother is in a major city like London or Sydney, or in a smaller lodge in Portugal or New Zealand, he is part of the same, worldwide fraternity.
