Foundation of Lodge Double Bay 331 (1920s)

Masonic Lodge Double Bay was established in 1920, during a period of growth and optimism following the First World War. The Lodge was founded by a group of local Freemasons who shared a vision of building a strong and enduring brotherhood based on the principles of integrity, charity, and fraternity. From its earliest days, the Lodge became a cornerstone of the Double Bay community—hosting gatherings, supporting charitable initiatives, and fostering lifelong connections among its members.

Growth and Community Through the Mid-20th Century

Throughout the mid-1900s, the Lodge experienced significant expansion. The 1960s marked a golden era for Freemasonry in Double Bay, with as many as nine Lodges meeting regularly under its roof. These gatherings reflected not only the strength of the fraternity but also its deep roots in the social and civic fabric of Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs. The Lodge became known for its dedication to community service, mentorship, and the promotion of moral and personal development.

Modernisation and Renewal (1990s–2000s)

In 1998, the Lodge underwent a major transformation with the construction of the current supper room. This upgrade replaced the original festive board area located downstairs, which had become too large for regular use. By 2000, the Lodge was operating with three active Lodges meeting upstairs in a self-contained space, designed to better suit the needs of a modern membership while preserving the integrity of its Masonic traditions.

Freemasonry Today and Beyond

Today, Freemasonry continues to thrive both locally and globally, with more than seven million members worldwide. Masonic Lodge Double Bay remains committed to the timeless values that have guided the fraternity for over a century—brotherhood, charity, truth, and personal growth. As it approaches its next chapter, the Lodge stands as a proud symbol of heritage, unity, and community service in the heart of Sydney.
